His Light in the Dark

The dog got me up at 12:30 this morning. Most of the time, unless the moon is out, it is pitch black out here in the country. You can see all kinds of constellations – even the Milky Way! But, if there is no moon or it’s cloudy, you can’t see your hand in front of your face. If I didn’t turn on my dog’s red blinking detector light on his collar, I would not be able to see him at all.

But when I stepped out last night, I could plainly see him. It was “light,” but there was no moon and no stars. There was complete cloud cover, and yet it was light. “Where does this light come from?” I asked myself. Dracula (my Doberman) was running back and forth in the field and around and around the house – and I could see his every move.

How do you explain this? Well, I couldn’t and I can’t, but I know what I saw and I remember something I had read. Maybe that helps explain what David meant when he wrote about God in Psalm 139:12 “…even the darkness will not be dark to you; the night will shine like the day, for darkness is as light to you.”

The Apostle John wrote in 1 John 1: 5-6 “…God is light; in Him there is no darkness at all. If we claim to have fellowship with Him yet walk in the darkness, we lie and do not live by the truth.”

In other words, if you claim to be a Christian and you don’t even know who He is, you’re out there running in the dark. If it never even dawns on you that in any situation to ask first for His help and guidance, you need to turn on the light.

Jesus said in John 8:12 “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of the world.”

How about we all start the New Year by first recognizing we can’t follow who we don’t know. Seek Jesus. Seek first His face.

You can start by hanging around folks who want to know Him too. Read His Word – if you don’t understand what you read – ask God to help you – and keep trying. God loves a loyal apprentice who will never give up. You will be rewarded. You will receive His light within your darkness. We all have those dark days and nights, but even under cloud cover, His light is there.

He loves us and will never leave us. God has a red blinking detector on every one of us and can find us in the dark and lead us to His light.

Happy New Year my friends! May God’s light shine in and upon you.
