Teach Us to Number Our Days

Teach us to number our days, so that we may gain a heart of wisdom. Psalm 90:12

One of the best things I learned to help me in the New Year came from a Christian author and speaker that I was privileged to hear last year. He spoke at The Academy for Spiritual Formation in Alabama. What you are about to hear sounds ghastly, but it has a powerful impact.

He told us that on rising every morning, he would look in the mirror and say, “You are going to die.”

Wow. At first, I was appalled at hearing this … and then I tried it.

I got up the next morning, looked straight into the mirror and said, “You are going to die.” Talk about setting my priorities straight!

We are all going to die, which means our days are numbered. We only have a certain amount of time to make a difference in this world!

Yet you do not know what tomorrow will bring. What is your life? For you are a mist that appears for a little time and then vanishes. James 4:14

God has gifted each of us (yes, this means YOU!) with different talents and skills so that nothing would be lacking in this world that He has created for us. We are here to learn and to teach! I am convinced that there are no coincidences. There are people who will be sent to you. They will cross your path, sometimes for a short time, but always for a reason.

With that thought in mind, we need to get to work! YOU can make a difference in someone’s life, and today may be your last chance to do it!

Don’t miss an opportunity to speak and to spread the good news of the love of Jesus Christ! The Holy Spirit of God will prompt you to speak and will teach you what to say. Read the words from the Apostle Paul:

“I came to you in weakness and fear, and with much trembling. My message and my preaching were not with wise and persuasive words, but with a demonstration of the Spirit’s power so that your faith might not rest on men’s wisdom, but on God’s power.” 1 Corinthians 2: 3-5.

Tomorrow, when you get up and look in the mirror, don’t just remind yourself of your mortality, but also remember your great worth to God. Then get out there and make a difference in this world! Someone’s life is depending on it. Maybe that someone is a neighbor, a grandchild or co-worker. Maybe that someone is … me.

For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them. Ephesians 2:10
